"An important function of coconut oil is that it supports mitochondrial respiration, increasing energy production that has been blocked by the unsaturated fatty acids. Since the polyunsaturated fatty acids inhibit thyroid function at many levels, coconut oil can promote thyroid function simply by reducing those toxic effects. It allows normal mitochondrial oxidative metabolism, without producing the toxic lipid peroxidation that is promoted by unsaturated fats.” Dr. Ray Peat, Ph.D

And you know, Charlie, if you look at this line...

"Since the polyunsaturated fatty acids inhibit thyroid function at many levels..."

...and if someone has been heavily and steadily consuming PUFAs for years, like I had,
then we can see why thyroid supplementation might not
be able to correct metabolism right away.
It might be having to work against the cumulative load of PUFAs,
and "at many levels."

Just wanted to point out that angle
as a lot of us have been focusing on thyroid supplementation
and wondering about how much it can be expected to do
in terms of metabolism....

Thats a very good point. I would tend to think that thyroid will speed it up somewhat though.

So, if the cell wont react to thyroid hormone, then why would putting more thyroid hormone in make it any better? Although, what if the thyroid is down regulated at the same time? Then maybe it would be beneficial to start pumping some hormone in.

That's not how I interpret it. We must continually, similar to the guide on Lita Lee's site, increase thyroid dosage to reach the point where we are at the magic temps + pulse. Then over time we find we can gradually, as the PUFAs are purged from the body, reduce the thyroid dosage and still achieve those high temps. Like the story of the 12 grain lady, eventually she was able to get the same effects off of 2 grains (or less?).

Damn interesting discussion!

As little as one or two teaspoonfuls of coconut oil per day appears to have a strong protective effect against obesity and cancer.
