Pretty strong statements in that article, considering it was released from the UC system.

"New UC Riverside research shows soybean oil not only leads to obesity and diabetes, but could also affect neurological conditions like autism, Alzheimer's disease, anxiety, and depression."

"Used for fast food frying, added to packaged foods, and fed to livestock, soybean oil is by far the most widely produced and consumed edible oil in the U.S., according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. In all likelihood, it is not healthy for humans."

i’m glad they also used coconut oil as a counter example for a healthier option. hopefully the tide is turning in the main stream

Hope this news spreads. There is potential for a lot of benefit if soybean oil usage were to drastically go down.

Other pufa-oils didn’t show the same bad effects the article claims. Not yet read the original publication, did they test this others? The article sais no. How come to that conclusion then? Also, soybean oil reduced in o-6 were as bad. Curious results.

„One additional note on this study -- the research team has not yet isolated which chemicals in the oil are responsible for the changes they found in the hypothalamus. But they have ruled out two candidates. It is not linoleic acid, since the modified oil also produced genetic disruptions; nor is it stigmasterol, a cholesterol-like chemical found naturally in soybean oil.

Identifying the compounds responsible for the negative effects is an important area for the team's future research.

"This could help design healthier dietary oils in the future," said Poonamjot Deol, an assistant project scientist in Sladek's laboratory and first author on the study.

"The dogma is that saturated fat is bad and unsaturated fat is good. Soybean oil is a polyunsaturated fat, but the idea that it's good for you is just not proven," Sladek said“

This also seems relevant and I think is something discussed here before:

"Sladek explained that some of the negative metabolic effects of animal fat that researchers often see in rodents could actually be due to high levels of linoleic acid, given that most U.S. farm animals are fed soybean meal.
"“This could be why our experiments are showing that a high-fat diet enriched in conventional soybean oil has nearly identical effects to a diet based on lard,” she said."

As well as this about the amount:
"But just because it is essential does not necessarily mean it is good to have more of it in your diet,” Deol said. “Our bodies need just 1-to-2 percent linoleic acid from our diet, but Americans, on average, have 8-to-10 percent linoleic acid in their diets.”

1-2% would put the "need" for it at 3-6g for a 3000kcal diet.

Well thats only lowly Professor Frances from a peripheral University. Remember Karin Michels, a rolific german doctor who letured in big Harvard? She knows that Coconut oil is pure poison, because of its sat fats.
