Alcohol Effects

I have been drinking less and less as i get older. In part because i don't go out that much to socialise due to having a 2 y/o.

I will have a glass of wine occasionally and i reckon i probably have 2 glasses per month approx.

I went out this weekend for a christmas night out with male friends and i drank 2 1/2 pints of beer / lager. I enjoyed myself and didn't really feel the effects from the alcohol that much.

However, the next day i was much more tired. It was most noticeable in the afternoon and i had to go for a sleep at 3pm (not like me).

So i wondered what has happened here ? Am i just getting worse at processing the alcohol ? Could cortisol have been affected by the alcohol, so putting my thyroid / adrenal axis slightly off.

I am hypothyroid and take T4 and a little T3 and generally do well.

Do you typically not drink beer at all? I've noticed it makes me feel under the weather the next day also. Here is something pboy said in another thread, which rang true to me considering I had heard similar allegations against beer before (particularly the yeast)

pboy said:
post 66583 potential lactic acid, undigestible starch residues, yeast toxins which are estrogenic, and its water content is a bit too much for what it supplies tonicity wise

When I drink I stick to liquor now with some added sugar (juice or soda), and I have noticed the next day is always less foggy.

I only tended to drink beer if i went out. If at home i will have that glass of wine instead.

I am going to go out this friday so will probably have some beer again, not much though. So it will be interesting to see if it affects me again.

I wonder if it is affecting the sleep as well and this may be why i felt so tired the next afternoon.

Even gluten + liquor seems to be easier on the body than beer is...

I will be having some party this weekend.
I don't drink at all but on this occasion I will "have to" drink something. Not like a glass of wine, probably there will be sth more. :.pleasedontjudge:

What would be the best thing to optimise consequences of drinking?
Aspirin day after? C vitamin. Progesterone? Fruits?

Not drinking. Seriously though, serotonin antagonists will generally help like cyproheptadine and ondanesteron. Progesterone will likely help as well, as will anything that lowers estrogen.

I found that Progesterone after drinking is very helpful. Activated charcoal helps. The most effective thing I've ever encountered for opposing alcohol's toxic effect is liposomal glutathione, but it's prohibitively expensive for me, and some say it can lower endogenous glutathione production.

I agree with Charlie about B1 as drinking alcohol increases the need for it.

Alcohol and thiamine

Alcohol consumption leads to thiamine deficiency by decreasing the transport of thiamine across the intestinal mucosa, impairing capacity of the liver to store thiamine and impairing the phosphorylation of thiamine to the more biological active thiamine diphosphate[14].

The active form of thiamine, thiamine diphosphate, is the co-enzyme of three major enzymes: transketolase (TK), pyruvate dehydrogenase complex (PDH) and α-ketoglutarate dehydrogenase (α-KHD). These enzymes are present in the mitochondria and are essential in citric acid cycle and for the generation of ATP. Alcohol especially decreases the amount of thiamine diphosphate. In vitro and in vivo experiments have shown that thiamine pyrophosphokinase is inhibited by ethanol[15]. Furthermore, chronic ethanol intake leads to increased thiamine diphosphatase[16]. As shown in Figure 1, this double action, due to chronic exposure to ethanol, further decreases the amount of thiamine diphosphate.
