Do we know if the "volume" of hippocampus can restore to "normal" when the stressors resolve (through reduction of cortisol/stress chemicals and therapy?)? Haidut has also mentioned damaged serotonergic system. Early childhood neglect and abuse can leave a child with "reactive attachment disorder."
There is a very creepy video of how a child in this condition behaves:
[warning: creepy]

Can we really undue this? I mean, I hope so.
I have issues with empathy, as in even a mild stressor will remove my capacity for empathy. Pregnenolone and progesterone (lowering estrogen and cortisol) relieves the stress, and I retain the ability to empathize and care for others. Remove the pregnenolone and progesterone, and I revert back to a lesser state.

It's absolutely possible. Balancing hormones allows for proper therapy.

Thanks for sharing that vital information Dave. It's just amazing that we can puzzle through this here.
You're a brilliant guy. I know you understand how these stress chemical undermine us. It has to feel better to be connected to the Universe in an empathic way.
Thanks!!

Of course! The work we're doing in this community, and the work Ray has done is not just a niche; it's the most important work being done, period.

This all underlies health, God and spirituality, philosophy, and true meaning devoid of artificiality, and I'm joyful to be part of this great experiment.

Rat Park was so conclusive and telling yet never amounted to much in mainstream medicine ideology. Really another hallmark example of ther incompetence and corruption.

Progesterone, thyroid, anti-serotonin chemicals, sugar, niacinamide, pregnenolone, DHEA, DHT, T, aspirin, vitamin K, etc can all recover the brain. Nothing is permament, but the stress has to have abated significantly before recovery can begin. Otherwise, it's just damage control, which I guess it's still better than nothing.

Absolutely, and those studies actually have been repeated by the US military since then to see if prisoners of war can recover as well as whether PTSD patients (who have the highest rate of addiction) can recover from addiction and mental disorders. The answer was a resounding yes, but because the studies determined the cost to implement the environmental change would be too high, the Pentagon scrapped the projects and focused on medication instead. So, it was not just incompetence - at very high levels in the government a choice was consciously made that implementing a "rat park" for ordinary citizens is too expensive and medication offers a "win-win" for everybody - i.e. pharma gets its money and no large scale social changes would be needed. Of course, it is not a win-win but at least that's how the press presented it.
Btw, I think those experiments are colloquially known in the Pentagon as the "The Military Rat Park".

I know that's an old thread, but I listened to an interview with Georgi yesterday where he talked about addiction (or "addiction") briefly. How does what people call desensitization or tolerance fit in here, meaning people need more of their drug of choice (or behavior) or harder drugs (or genres - like in porn users/"addicts", it's pretty common that what once turned you on doesn't do it anymore and they need harder and more extreme stuff to get aroused). Is this because stress (or another underlying issue) is relieved in the short term but amplified in the long term, so that it becomes a vicious cycle?
