This is a study that looked at the thyroid status of alcoholics in early abstinence. One problem in studying this particular issue is that the best available study group for the effect of alcohol on the thyroid is that researchers can really only get hold of alcoholics who have submitted for treatment in a rehab situation. But...they studies them anyway and found generally that alcohol suppresses both T4 and T3 uptake and has a curious "blunting" effect on the TSH value; in other words it is usually lower than expected.

This full article talks about the fact that alcoholics have disregulated thyroids and that usually their thyroid function is messed up a little bit more while in recovery. It suggests that the more messed up a person's thyroid is, the less likely they are to succeed in being abstinent.
