They gave 50g sugar, glucose or fructose water to humans. Fructose showed a mild increase in blood sugar levels within a 2 hour window, where the others raised it a lot

Same here Differential effects of honey, sucrose, and fructose on blood sugar levels - PubMed "75g Fructose shows minimal changes on blood sugar levels"

So does more of the fructose go directly to glycogen or something by comparison? And just release when blood sugar drops below a baseline?

All of them return blood sugar to baseline or mostly to baseline by 2 hours. & I guess whatever went to glycogen sustains that for as long as it lasts

This is more of a bump than an answer.

Fructose needs processing in the liver and tends to replete liver glycogen better or faster VS glucose.

The fed vs fasting state of the subjects might also be playing a factor.

It is well established that glucose polymers typically have a more pronounced glycemic effect when compared to sucrose which is about half fructose and half glucose.
