Kudos to @tankasnowgod who clued me in on how exactly buying/selling stocks works in the Western world. Two entities - DTC and Cede & Co. control the whole scheme and when you "buy" or "sell" stock no actual stocks change hands unless you are selling the paper stock certificates physically...
