Enjoyed this documentary. From 2014 but I’d not seen before.

@JamesGatz the character Sam is your forum persona :tearsofjoy:

Glad someone mentioned Moon. Also if you're good at reading between the lines Passengers from 2016 has a lot to it. There's very little at the surface but disney style sci-fi. But if you can imagine the film, its characters and props a metaphor you can take it somewhere interesting.

I definitely see it hahaha

I heard someone say the other day:

"If you want the truth - watch movies/tv shows, if you want fantasy - watch the news"

I'm convinced they tell 100% of the truth scattered around movies/TV shows: another example I came across the other day is this:

Straight up, this is true. Although often mixed with lies or otherwise bizarre ideas. It can be a bit of a minefield.

Did you see The Matrix Resurrections? There's a lot in it, between the lines.

Kill the Messenger deserves more recognition on this thread. It's a great movie in all the technical ways (great story, writing, characters, actors), but also based on Gary Webb's "Dark Alliance" story, and what happened to him around that time. And all done on a very sparse budget.

It hits on some big issues, like the CIA selling/distributing cocaine into inner cities, and "Asset Forfeiture." Both are objectively true and even verified by government sources. But it's clear they don't want these issues getting mass attention.

(Side Note- While "Forfeiture" may seem unconstitutional in nature, it actually is constitutionally justified. Although it's certainly not what the framers of the Constitution had in mind. There's a document called "The Secret Maritime Jurisdiction Exposed" that can be found on the internet that goes into the details, and Yusef El did videos on the first part of that document).

I think it's pretty clear that some powerful forces (likely inside and outside the government) kept that movie from getting a big release (though it wasn't outright "censored"). It fits in the category of "Oscar bait," and should have been huge during awards season, like Argo and Dallas Buyers Club were, two similar type pictures (based on a true story, scandalous, great actors and such), but Kill The Messenger never got the same type of treatment. Jeremy Renner was one of the top, well known actors in 2014, so it doesn't make sense why a studio that had a gem of a movie featuring Renner at that time wouldn't heavily promote it, especially around the time of Awards Shows. Unless, of course, they were pressured or threatened not to.

Good recommendations here! Here are some of my favorites.

One flew over the cuckoo’s nest
Rainman
Groundhog Day
Three Colours Trilogy (French)
Heidi (2015) - she does all the Peaty things!

These two are the slow types that can almost put you to sleep, then haunt you:
-The Island (Russian)
-Jean de Florette and Manon des Sources (French)
