Sounds like a secular attempt at a concept of soul?

Yes, in philosphical/religious terminology the non-material part of that duality would be called soul. The word psyche derives from the Greek ψυχή, which translates as mind, soul, spirit - in short, invisible animating entity which occupies the physical body.

Heidegger called that "dasein" in german, or literally "being" but it has many more connotations than the same in English. He felt that, although there is clearly a physical world, it is only known in the being of, literally the act of happening, which included human actors. He had no illusions about "shared meaning" at least not as is casually suggested by that phrase.

Wish I'd had or could get time to study Heidegger in depth, Sein und Zeit in particular.
