re egg shell niminer composition:
About 95% of the dry eggshell is calcium carbonate weighing 5.5 grams.

The average eggshell contains about .3% phosphorus and .3% magnesium and traces of sodium, potassium, zinc, manganese, iron & copper.

ideally, irganic eggs, and if applicable - don't use the bit of the shell with the ink stamp!

I made the sodium salt of salicylic acid, using much larger proportions (8g SA, 5g bicarbonate), mixed & reacted in filtered water.
After a few days, i poured it into a pyrex dish & evaporated in an oven at medium/low temperature.

I scrapped up the dried NaSali crystals and stored in an airtight jar.
Quite a straighstraight process!

Next time I'll use a much larger ~65g of salicylic acid!

Calcium Salicylate was made using ½ mole of Salicylic acid aka SA (138g/2 = 65g) and ½ mole of Calcium carbonate (100g/2 = 50g), using organic egg shells which are ~95% CaCO³.

Combined in cold water & mixed till no more signs of a reaction were present.

Hot water isn't ideal, as it can speed up the rate of hydrolysis of the CaSali salt into calcium and SA.

I will then filter the water to remove unreacted material & the inner egg shell membrane.
I am working out the best way to dry the solution/isolate the CaSali salt without using heat...

Here's the proper weights for Salicylic acid & Sodium Bicarbonate.

  • 138g Salicylic acid
  • 52.94g Sodium Bicarbonate
  • = 159.96g Sodium Salicylate
